An appeal by 'The Federation of University Teachers' Associations (FUTA)' PDF Print E-mail
Policy Briefs

The following appeal is shared by IDEAS.  IDEAs or the International Development Economics Associates is committed to building a pluralistic network of committed researchers, teachers and other economists interested in advancing progressive heterodox approaches to critically analysing and addressing the problems of economic development processes.

This is a statement of solidarity in response to the appeal by 'The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA)' of Sri Lanka in support of a cross university national strike for increased state funding and reforms in education. It is addressed to the Sri Lankan government, urging it to engage with the striking academic community, students and teachers, for a comprehensive consultation over reform of public education system and increased state funding in education which has dwindled to one of the lowest in the world in just six to seven years from 2.9% of GDP in 2005 to 1.85% at present. Over the years the gains made through free education have been slowly eroded. With neoliberal reforms of the educational system, there is now an attempt to pass on the cost of education to parents and students, at a time when people are still struggling to rebuild their lives and livelihoods in the post war context. The appeal by university of Colombo teachers' association sent as an attachment here gives all details. The statement along with some of the signatories is also attached here.

Here comes another story from Diggi’s story bag. The Congress leader, Digvijay Singh is known for his too sharp tongue and baseless statements. As per his nature, he gave another baseless statement and this time it is about CAG. As per his propaganda to shift attention of common people from the black and heinous deeds of his party and the incumbency of their so called leader regarding this matter he launched a serious accusation on CAG Vinod Rai. He accused Mr. Rai of having political ambitions. He compared present CAG with CAG of 1985-1990 Mr.T.N.Chaturvedi who gave a report on Bofors scam, which put a blame on the then P.M. Mr. Rajiv Gandhi. It’s notable that after retirement Mr. Chaturvedi fought and won elections and became B.J.P. M.P. This is the reason why Digvijay Singh is accusing Mr. Rai of having political ambitions. He thinks that by issuing reports that are against congress CAG will gain public support and could become a political figure of India. But it should be noted that the CAG is right now and as well as back at that time too.

This write up studies the changing pattern of gatekeeping in contemporary form of mediation of news. The paradigm of gatekeeping has increased vastly from ‘editor’ as the only gatekeeper to the gatekeeping at every stage of communicating information. Selection of news is now based more on money, influence, power and agenda than the traditional principles of newsworthiness. Gatekeeping is an art and a responsibility but is losing its essence due to media convergence. Although ‘gatekeeping’ is becoming more of a negative connotation, it would still be required in a certain amount to check various unwanted and harmful information from being sent into the society.

The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with the School of management, Doon University organized a seminar at the Senate Hall in the Doon University campus on Saturday, 8th September, 2012. This seminar proved to be a step towards strengthening the bond between the academia and the industry. It turned out to be a platform where the ideas from both the Industry and the Academia were put together. The brainstorming discussions were enjoyed by students and the panelists equally. The major themes of the Seminar were “Synergy between Industry-academia relationship to bridge the skill gap” and “Industry intervention and linkages in curriculum reforms & learning outcomes”. To address these two significant and broad themes, the Seminar was held in three sessions as mentioned below:

Life Stories

A few meters from Doon University (which is also my residence at present), a tent was pitched with a very familiar banner “Ayurvedic Khandani Dawakhana” claiming to diagnose any disease which our bodies may be carrying just by reading our pulses and heal them permanently with the blessings of Ayurveda. The tent looked dark, mysterious and also a little bit scary. The roadisde Khandani Dawakhana (Family clinic) is one of the most common sights in various cities of India. I have always wondered how the medicines kept inside these little tents work. What kinds of patients do they receive and how do they manage their business… This time I got a chance to have a closer look at these nomads and learn more about the challenging life they live.
